The history of Belarus dates back more than one thousand years. The area was formerly a part of the Principality of Polotsk, and then was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and eventually the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the late 18th century Belarus was annexed to the Russian Empire. During both World Wars, the nation suffered greatly: during World War II, many cities and villages were destroyed. After the breakup of the U.S.S.R. in 1991, Belarus has declared its independence and has maintained its traditions and customs, building its education, industry, health care and public infrastructure.

Belarus is a country well-known for its beauty, its historical landmarks and its peacefulness. People visit to admire the ancient Mir castle, the city of Minsk with its wide streets, parks, museums and impressive buildings, the Braslav lakes and one of Europe’s oldest forests – Nesvizh and the European bison, which awaits its visitors there. The nation is also known for its folk traditions, hand crafts, music festivals and a rich body of literature. Families are highly valued in Belarusian culture as are hospitality, education and community life. The folk music, dancing, handicrafts and seasonal festivals passed down from generation to generation are the traditional methods of celebrating. The respect for elders, family relations, and the maintenance of local traditions are still significant aspects of life. The cuisine of Belarus, like in many other countries, is based on the seasonal ingredients and agricultural traditions of the country. Typical dishes are potato pancakes (draniki), machanka, kalduny, borscht, solyanka, holubtsi, babka, kletski, fresh rye bread, dairy products, mushrooms, berries and many homemade soups and pastries that are enjoyed all over the country.

Belarus has a moderate continental climate with four seasons. The summers are warm and pleasant and the winters are cold and snowy. Spring and fall are pleasant and nature is beautiful. This seasonal climate affects people’s outdoor activities and everyday life throughout the country Belarus’ economy is mixed and is based on manufacturing, engineering, information technologies, agriculture, food processing, forestry, and the chemical sector. The country is renowned for the manufacturing of tractors, heavy machinery, fertilisers, dairy, and agricultural products. The technology sector has also developed in recent years, especially in Minsk, which is emerging as an important hub of software development and information technology.

Belarus is home to many important cities and towns, including Minsk (the capital), Gomel, Mogilev, Vitebsk, Grodno, Brest, Bobruisk, Baranovichi, Pinsk, Orsha, Mazyr, Novopolotsk, Lida, Soligorsk, Molodechno, Polotsk, Kobrin, Slutsk, Borisov, Zhlobin, and many other municipalities and communities across the country. Belarus has been part of the history of Islam for several centuries. The Lipka Tatars were the first to arrive in the country’s Muslim heritage, in the 14th and 15th centuries. These Muslim communities maintained their religion without any conflict with other communities. Tatar villages and historic mosques continue to be an integral part of Belarus’s cultural heritage.
