What is Hajj?

The Fifth Pillar of Islam

Allah calls for every capable Muslim with financial resources to perform Hajj, which is the sacred pilgrimage travel to Mecca.

Hajj isn’t just a checklist of rituals. It’s Islam’s fifth pillar, a once-in-a-lifetime duty for every Muslim who’s physically and financially able. Think of it as a spiritual boot camp—a week-long journey where you retrace the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), his wife Hajar, and their son Ismail. But here’s the twist: it’s also a crash course in humility, patience, and unity.

Allah says in the Quran:
“And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.” (22:27)

That “distant pass” could be your hometown, your struggles, or even your doubts. Hajj meets you where you are.

The Quran states:

All people must complete a holy pilgrimage to the House whenever they find a proper route according to the Quran 3:97.

Muslims who can afford it must make this sacred journey to follow in Prophet Ibrahim (AS) footsteps alongside his family while demonstrating unity through voluntary sacrifices for Allah.

Why Hajj Matters: A Lifeline for the Modern Soul

In a world obsessed with filters and followers, Hajj strips everything back. You trade designer clothes for two plain white sheets (Ihram).

Replaced by days of prayer, reflection, and walking—lots of walking. But beneath the simplicity lies a profound truth: we’re all equal here.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) put it perfectly:
“An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does wealth or status define you—except through piety.”

Hajj isn’t about snapping Kaaba selfies (though that happens). It’s about asking: Who am I when no one’s watching? What do I need to let go of?

The Significance of Hajj in Islam

The religious act of Hajj enables believers to experience spiritual renewal as well as complete equality with all other Muslims before the presence of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

A person who accomplishes Hajj with a pure heart directed at Allah and refrains from indecency and moral wrongdoings returns uncontaminated like a newborn child according to Sahih Bukhari 1521.

The ritual promotes universal Muslim solidarity and both humility and appreciation which counter Islamic Sunnah and Qur’anic principles.

Step 1: Kaabah Tawaf (Tawaf al-Qudum)

Dua During Tawaf (Hisn al-Muslim)

Transliteration:
Allahumma inni as’aluka ridaka wal-jannah, wa a’udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar.
Translation:
“O Allah, I ask for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure and the Fire.”

Step 2: Perform Sa’i (Walking between Safa and Marwah)

Step 3: Depart to Mina

Step 4: Day at Arafat (Wuquf-e-Arafat)

Dua at Arafat (Quran 3:193)

Transliteration:
Rabbana innana sami’na munadiyany yunadi lil-imani an aminu bi rabbikum fa amanna, Rabbana faghfir lana dhunubana wa kaffir ‘anna sayyi’atina wa tawaffana ma’al-abrar.
Translation:
“Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, saying, ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins and erase our misdeeds, and cause us to die with the righteous.”

Declaration of Tawhid at Arafat (Sahih Muslim)

Transliteration:
Translation:
“There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and praise, and He is over all things competent.”

Step 5: Night at Muzdalifah

After sunset, head to Muzdalifah. After prayer in Maghrib and Isha people should rest for a short period then gather 49–70 pebbles for the ritual of Rami.

Step 6: Stoning the Devil in Mina (Ramy al-Jamarat)

The Mina area has become a sacred place for Muslims to engage in Rami (stoning ritual).
On 10th Dhul-Hijjah (Eid al-Adha) the pilgrim completes the task of stoning by hitting the largest pillar (Jamarat al-Aqaba) seven times to reject temptations.

Step 7: Animal Sacrifice (Qurbani)

You or your designated representative should carry out the ritual of sacrificing livestock animals to honor Prophet Ibrahim’s act of devotion. People normally choose Qurbani donation services that are provided by Hajj package providers.

Dua After Animal Sacrifice (Sahih Bukhari 5565)

Transliteration:
Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.
Translation:
“In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”

Step 8: Trim Hair & Remove Ihram

Pilgrims can remove their ihram clothing by cutting their hair as well as removing their hair.
Men follow two traditions of hair removal through shaving or trimming while women perform a specific cutting method which lengthens to their finger tip. The act relieves you from some restrictions of Ihram.

Step 9: Kaabah Tawaf & Sa’i (Tawaf al-Ifadah)

You must return to conduct both Tawaf and Sa’i as required rituals for Hajj.

Step 10: Stoning the Devil in Mina (Days of Tashreeq)

Hajj devotees stone devil in the area known as Mina throughout the remaining period.
During the period spent in Mina guests should stone all three pillars (small, medium, large) with seven pebbles per day for two or three consecutive days.

Step 11: Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)

Another Tawaf by the Kaabah becomes a requirement before departing from Mecca because it signifies your departure from Hajj.

The Universal Message of Hajj

Hajj welcomes all people from humanity to learn essential life lessons.

Humility

We live in a society dominated by individuals trying to promote themselves but Islam teaches us about embracing humility.

Compassion

In an age of indifference.

Gratitude

People tend to show gratitude during periods which require less complaining.

When you experience the hardships of division and inequality and despair look to the mass of white that stands as a lesson for humanity in Mecca. During some days throughout the year the global community unites. No borders. No hatred. Just people—flawed, hopeful, and human.
